How to Solve the Problem of Abnormal Temperature in Optical Modules

During the operation of optical modules, temperature has a significant impact. If the operating temperature of the optical module is too high or too low, the optical power may decrease, sensitivity may decrease, and the eye diagram may deteriorate. In severe cases, communication data errors may occur. If the temperature of the optical module is not within the normal range, an alarm will be triggered, indicating that the optical module is in bad condition. The switch will stop sending data until the optical module returns to normal working conditions before resending/receiving data. In addition, it also accelerates the aging of internal components, reduces the lifespan of the optical module, and in severe cases, may even directly damage the optical module. Therefore, it is necessary to select optical modules with corresponding temperature levels in different application environments to avoid module failures. We offer related information in the optical transceiver wiki part.

There are three types of temperature levels for optical modules:

  • Commercial temperature level (0-70°C): used in data centers and enterprise equipment rooms because air conditioning is used to maintain room temperature.

  • Extended temperature level (-20-85°C): suitable for outdoor nodes in tropical areas.

  • Industrial temperature level (-40-85°C): used in environments with large temperature changes such as outdoors, remote mountain areas, and tunnels. Industrial optical modules will incorporate temperature compensation software to ensure a stable operating current supply for the modules. When the temperature changes, the temperature compensation software will take effect.

As a professional optical module manufacturer, we remind you that:in actual use, commercial and industrial temperature levels are more commonly used.

Generally, optical modules and communication equipment generate heat during operation. If the appropriate temperature level of the optical module is selected, the situation of the working temperature of the optical module being too low will rarely occur. In actual use, the situation of the operating temperature of the optical module being too high is more common. When the temperature of the optical module exceeds the normal range, the indicator light of the corresponding port will turn red to indicate an alarm. At this time, the optical module should be replaced, and the indicator light of the port alarm status should be observed again after 5 minutes. If the red light of the port is off, it indicates that the optical module has returned to normal.

Maintaining the standard and stable temperature of optical modules is crucial! We must also be careful not to buy inferior or second-hand optical modules. The use of inferior recycled materials and poor internal design of optical modules will lead to poor heat dissipation and frequent temperature abnormalities. In order to reduce the occurrence of abnormal temperature conditions of optical modules, clear usage scenarios should be identified when selecting optical modules, and optical modules with corresponding temperature levels should be selected. Also, to avoid unnecessary losses, reliable suppliers should be selected to ensure the quality and performance of optical modules. And transceiver modules compatibility matrix is also important.

During the operation of optical modules, if the temperature is too high or too low, there may be a decrease in optical power, sensitivity, and eye diagram deterioration, and in severe cases, communication data errors may occur. When selecting optical modules, clear usage scenarios should be identified, and optical modules with corresponding temperature levels should be selected. When the temperature of the optical module exceeds the normal range, the indicator light of the corresponding port will turn red to indicate an alarm.
