Classification of Gigabit Optical Transceivers

①Classified by packaging:

They are SFP packaged optical module and GBIC packaged optical module.

The SFP has a smaller volume but comparable performance than GBIC.

②Classified by connection solution:

They are Gigabit single fiber and dual fiber transceiver.

Gigabit single fiber transceiver has only one interface, which is for transmitting and receiving, connected with a single-mode fiber;  the Gigabit dual-fiber transceiver has two interfaces, one for transmitting and the other for receiving, usually connected with two fibers.

③Classified by transceiver mode:

They are Gigabit single-mode transceivers and multi-mode transceivers.

Gigabit single-mode transceivers are used in medium and long-distance transmission and connected by single-mode optical fiber; Gigabit multi-mode transceivers are used for short-distance transmission and connected by multi-mode optical fibers.

④Classified by wavelength:

They are 850nm/1310nm/1550nm.

The 850nm wavelength is used by multi-mode transceiver with a maximum transmission distance of 550m; 1310/1550nm are single-mode module with transmission distance of 10-40km/40-120km.

⑤Classified by interface:

They are LC and SC.

Normally, the GBIC and SFP single-fiber are with SC, and the SFP dual-fiber is with LC interface.

⑥Classified by brand:

The mainstream brands in China are Huawei, H3C, Ruijie, etc, and in foreign market are Cisco Arista Juniper Brocade, etc.
