What is the SC optical transceiver?
Optical transceiver with SC interface must be used with the SC jumper. The fastening method is a plug-in latch, which is very convenient and does not need to be rotated.
Classification of SC optical transceivers
SC optical transceivers are less frequently used than LC and MPO optical transceivers. There are mainly GBIC, XENPAK and X2 optical transceivers. The models are as following:
Package | Data Rate | Interface |
GBIC | 1.25Gbps | SC |
XENPAK | 10Gbps | SC |
X2 | 10Gbps/1.25Gbps/100Mbps | SC |
①GBIC
GBIC optical transceiver is the first hot-swappable optical module with SC interface. At that time, the characteristics are convenient for maintenance and update, fault location. It is used in Gigabit Ethernet and gradually replaced by SFP.
②XENPAK
XENPAK optical transceivers support all optical interfaces defined in the IEEE 802.3ae standard, and are the first-generation 10G Ethernet-oriented modules with SC interfaces, which are large in size and high in power consumption.
③X2
The internal functional modules of the X2 are basically the same as XENPAK optical module on the circuit board. The volume of the improved X2 is only a half of the XENPAK, which is suitable for high-density networks, but the cost is high, it is a transitional product.
In addition to the three transceivers above, some BIDI modules are also with SC interfaces. Due to size, cost, power consumption and other reasons, these three optical modules have been gradually eliminated by the market, which is also one of the reasons for less frequently use of SC optical modules.
