The distinction is that the 40GLR4PSM optical transceiver uses single-mode patch cables to transport data over long distances of 40G, i.e., the parallel optical signals are sent in parallel over eight single-mode fibres. The maximum transmission range is 2 kilometers.


4. QSFP-40G-ER4 optical transceiver


The 40GBASE-ER4 is the latest transceiver to be introduced, and it employs an LC duplex interface with a single-mode patch cable, similar to the earlier LR4. The greatest transmission range is 40 kilometers.
