Ⅲ. The four 100G optical transceivers have various cabling architectures

The 100G QSFP28 PSM4 optical transceiver works in single-mode fiber, whereas the 100G QSFP28 SR4 optical module works in multi-mode fiber.

Ⅳ. Varying operating principles of four 100G optical transceivers


Both the 100G QSFP28 SR4 optical transceiver and the 100G QSFP28 PSM4 optical transceiver work on the same principle: at the transmitter end, the electrical signal is transformed to an optical signal by the laser array and then broadcast in parallel across the optical fibre.


The photodetector array turns the parallel optical signal into a parallel electrical signal when it arrives at the receiving end, with the exception that the former is on a multimode fibre and the latter is on a single-mode fibre.


Both the 100G QSFP28 LR4 and 100G QSFP28 CWDM4 optical transceivers transform four 25Gbps electrical impulses into four LAN WDM optical signals, which are then multiplexed into a single channel for 100G optical communication.


The transceiver demultiplexes the 100G optical input into four LAN WDM optical signals, which are subsequently translated into four electrical output channels at the receiving end.
