With the rapid development of information technology, the demand for network data transmission continues to increase. In order to meet the growing demand for bandwidth, optical transceiver technology is also constantly innovating and improving. As one of the most advanced optical communication equipment currently, 800G optical transceiver will become an important part of future network connections with its high speed, stability and reliability.

What is an 800G optical transceiver?

800G optical transceivers can be regarded as the next generation of optical transceiver technology, capable of transmitting data at ultra-high speed. The current mainstream packages are 800G OSFP (Octal Small Form-factor Pluggable) and 800G QSFP-DD (Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable Double Density). Both QSFP-DD and OSFP can support 800G. The main difference between the two is that OSFP is slightly larger in size and has slightly higher power consumption. QSFP-DD is perfectly compatible with QSFP28 and QSFP+, while OSFP is not.

The 800G optical transceivers currently on the market mainly include: 800G SR8, 800G DR8, 800G DR8+, and 800G 2*FR4. The 800G optical transceiver supports standards such as IEE802.3ck and QSFP-DD 800 MSA, as well as the CMIS4.0 interface protocol. Built-in digital diagnostic function to meet EMI and ESD.

800G SR8: Uses 100G PAM4 and VCSEL technology for 8-channel optical signal transmission. It also uses EML design and silicon optical materials. The wavelength is 850nm, the single-channel rate is 100Gbps, and 16 optical fibers are required. This can be regarded as an upgraded version of 400G SR4, with the number of channels doubled. Its optical interface is MPO-16 or 2-row MPO-12. Dislike 400g SR8 transceiver, the 800G SR8 package is OSFP, the wavelength is 850nm, the power consumption is <16W, and the transmission distance is 500m.

800G DR8 includes 8 Tx and 8 Rx. The single channel rate is 100Gbps and requires 16 optical fibers. The optical interface of DR8 is MPO-16. The 800G DR8 package is QSFP-DD, the wavelength is 1310nm, the power consumption is <16W, and the transmission distance is 2km. .

800G OSFP 2*FR4 optical transceiver is an upgrade to 400G FR4, including 4 wavelengths (1271/1291/1311/1331nm), with a single channel rate of 100Gbps. To reduce the number of optical fibers through Mux, four optical fibers are required, and the optical interface adopts dual CS or dual duplex LC interface. The package is OSFP, wavelength CWDM, power consumption is less than 16W, and the transmission distance is 2km.
