Optical Transceiver classification description and differences

Summary:

This article explains the classification of optical transceivers, including classification according to transmission rate, packaging type, wavelength, mode, transmission distance, ring color, operating temperature and brand. Different types of optical transceivers are suitable for different demand scenarios.

Text:

Optical transceivers are an important part of optical fiber communications and can be divided into many types according to different classification methods. This article will explain the classification of optical transceiver and introduce in detail the differences between different types of optical transceivers.

1. Classification according to transmission rate

According to speed, optical transceivers are divided into multiple speed grades. Common ones include Gigabit optical transceivers (SFP), 10G optical transceivers (SFP+), and 40G, 100G, 200G, 400G and 800G optical transceivers. Optical transceivers with different rates are suitable for different demand scenarios.

2. Classification according to packaging type

According to packaging type, the current mainstream optical transceivers include SFP, SFP+, SFP28, QSFP+, QSFP28, QSFP-DD, and OSFP.

3. Classification according to wavelength

According to wavelength, optical transceivers can be divided into 850nm, 1310nm, 1550nm, CWDM and DWDM, etc. 850nm optical transceivers are suitable for short-distance transmission, such as server interconnection within data centers. 1310nm optical transceiver is suitable for medium and short distance transmission, such as local area network. 1550nm, CWDM, and DWDM optical transceivers are suitable for long-distance transmission, such as metropolitan area networks.

4. Classification according to mode:

Optical transceivers can be divided into two modes: single-mode such as single mode fiber sfp transceiver and multi-mode. Single-mode optical transceivers are suitable for long-distance transmission, while multi-mode optical transceivers are suitable for short-distance transmission within 2km.

5. Classification according to transmission distance

Short-distance optical transceiver: The transmission distance of short-distance optical transceiver is generally within 2 km in optical fiber communication scenarios.

Mid-distance optical transceiver: The transmission distance of mid-distance optical transceiver is generally between 10 km and 20 km in optical fiber communication scenarios.

Long-distance optical transceiver: The transmission distance of long-distance optical transceiver is generally more than 30 km in optical fiber communication scenarios.

6. Classification by tab color

Optical transceivers can be divided into black, blue, yellow, purple and other colors. Different colored tabs represent different wavelengths.

7. Classification according to usage temperature

According to temperature, optical transceivers can be divided into commercial grade, extended grade and industrial grade. The normal operating temperature of commercial grade is 0~+70℃; the extended grade is -20℃~+85℃; the working temperature of industrial grade is -40℃~+85℃.

8. Classification by brand

According to the brand, it can be divided into original transceivers and third-party compatible transceivers. Generally speaking, third-party compatible transceivers are not much different from original ones in terms of quality, technology, performance, etc., and can be used as the first choice for cost-effectiveness.

The above is a brief introduction to the classification and differences of optical transceivers. Different types of optical transceivers have differences in transmission rate, packaging type, wavelength and transmission distance. In practical applications, it is necessary to select the appropriate optical transceiver type according to specific needs to meet the needs of different optical fiber communication scenarios.
